Transcriptions

View Project Info

My work is an investigation into individual sensory responses to surrounding stimuli, primarily focusing on the senses of touch and sight. Through this investigation I have found myself developing my own language in order to transcribe these sensations into visual records.

The use of paper is central to my art practice, not only because of its traditional use in printmaking, but also because my sense of nostalgia towards its decreasing presence in our lives due to digital media. For all my life paper has been the medium for me to communicate my ideas, and it seems natural to continue that relationship.

I use my own touch to create textures on paper. The placements of these textures, whether from rubbing, poking holes, laminating, or sewing, create spaces that serve as visual resting points, or as breaks between symbols, as in a language.

The inherent monotony of the repetitive action required in constructing a piece creates a meditative space wherein I am more fully able to contemplate my own sensory experience. It is my intent that viewing my work should be equally meditative. The fragility and temporality of the work are qualities that offer a more tangible and complex interpretation of the senses.
